We carefully manage the Cemetery Park to protect its rich biodiversity while ensuring it remains a welcoming space for visitors and wildlife alike. Our plants, including trees, grasses, bulbs and shrubs, are carefully managed and our multi-year plans are designed to bring out and retain from our sites. This sometimes means more active management, and sometimes a more hands-off approach to wilding – we are all about that balance.
To paraphrase a supermodel (if we can be so bold!) – ‘it takes a lot of effort to look this good.’
We take a sensitive and careful approach, using hand-tools and people-power instead of heavy machinery. This relies on the efforts of around 4,000 volunteers per year, and dedicated specialists and experts across a range of considerations. We have the added complexity of working to preserve a number of monuments, including several which are listed on the Heritage at Risk Register.
In 2025 we are ‘catching up’ on a number of planned projects which were stalled due to Covid, and which have become more pressing as the towers start to emerge around the Bow Gasworks development. We have reported on the impact of this in terms of increased shade, wind, artificial light and increased footfall, and to preserve the delicate balance of biodiversity and species within the cemetery park and its value as a Local Natural Reserve and Metropolitan Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, we are working with experts and arborists to identify and encourage light corridors and redress species dominance.
