Description
Dr Hannah Billig set up as a family GP in Cable Street in 1927. Her dedication to her work and her patients made her one of the best known and highly respected doctors in what was one of the poorest neighbourhoods in the East End of London. Honoured for her bravery during the Second World War, the Angel of Cable Street returned to serve her East End patients until her retirement. In 1965 Dr Billig settled in Israel, where she continued ministering to the sick and needy. She died in 1987 at the age of 86.
About the author: Rosemary Taylor is a writer and researcher on local history in East London. Until she moved to Spain she lead guided walks in the East End, and gave talks on topics ranging from the East End suffragettes and women’s activities to the history of Blackwall and the Virginia Settlers.
